This martial arts style has gained an immense amount of popularity in recent years. This can be attributed to a few factors: more exposure through media bringing familiarity to the previously niche style, more instructors making themselves available for lessons, and of course, the benefits of learning Krav Maga are fantastic!

Here, we’ll dive into the history of Krav Maga, teach you the core tenants of the style, and let you know how you can begin your own journey of Krav Maga training.

Krav Maga Origins

Krav Maga (translated literally from its original Hebrew, meaning “contact combat”) began to be developed in the 1930s by a man named Imre Lichtenfield. It was his desire to create an easy to teach, practical self-defense style in order for civilians to be able to protect themselves.

Over the years, Krav Maga began to apply defensive maneuvers and techniques from a range of other styles, from European boxing to Judo. By isolating and incorporating these techniques under one umbrella style, the result is a martial arts style that is focused heavily on practical self-defense.

Krav Maga Information

Of course, as with any other martial art, it is heavily encouraged to avoid physical confrontation in real world scenarios as much as possible! However, as a last resort, if it is otherwise impossible to avoid direct confrontation, Krav Maga teaches to finish a fight as quickly as possible utilizing maximum physical aggression.

It is important to note that physical aggression is NOT the same thing as emotional aggression, or anger! Quite the opposite in fact. As with any martial art, one of the main keys is to always keep a clear head. Basic tenants such as honor and respect should ALWAYS be kept in mind when practicing.

So, how exactly does it work?

By taking and molding the most practical and simple techniques from other styles as we mentioned earlier, Krav Maga has become an extremely efficient style. Krav Maga techniques will teach you how to simultaneously attack and defend, letting you stay on the offensive while also protecting yourself. Preemptive strikes and counter attacks are the name of the game here – the goal is for your opponent to not be able to lay a hand on you at all!

The style also trains your mind: by teaching hyper-awareness of your surroundings, you’ll learn to improvise and be ready for any scenario. This kind of taught thinking can bleed over into your day to day life, the benefits of which are obvious! No bad ever came of being aware of your surroundings.
