Mixed Martial Arts, also known as MMA, only has a short history. The first UFC event, which helped MMA to grow massively, took place in 1993. In this short time, MMA has gained huge popularity and made its mark as a full-contact combat sport. Besides a big fan base on diverse social media channels, the acceptance across the world grew rapidly. At Sovereign Martial Arts we get more and more requests of people interested in our MMA classes. Long story short: MMA is probably the fastest growing sport in the world. Read on to get to know the reasons for this impressive development!
Strict regulations and classifications
Compared to other combat sports, MMA is exceptionally and clearly structured with a set of regulations and classifications developed by league officials. The fighters are separated into between eight and fourteen different weight classes, depending on the governing body or competition being held. This ensures equal chances in the fights and is probably the major reason MMA managed to become a mainstream sport.
Ultimate Fighting Champions League (UFC)
The first UFC event happened in 1993 and helped MMA to become a popular sport all over the globe. UFC is the most popular fighting league when it comes to MMA and holds pay-per-view (PPV) fights every week which are shown on several sports channels across the world. Many UFC fighters like Conor McGregor, Miesha Tate or Chris Weidman have celebrity status and appear on TV shows and movies.
Social media presence
At the beginning of MMA, the internet started to get going and social media started to become a part of everyone’s life. Growing up with this, most of the popular MMA fighters have a huge online fanbase. By being active on social media channels and interacting with fans on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook the fighters can connect with the outside world easily and build strong bonds with their fans. MMA is not restricted to a single country or gender. Both men and women can compete and thanks to the different weight classes there are fair chances for everyone. Also, there are UFC fighters from all over the world.
There are several movies promoting MMA. Mixed Martial Arts are the center of different famous Hollywood movies, such as “Never Back Down” (2008), “Warrior” (2012) and “Here Comes The Boom” (2012). Thanks to those movies, the sport gained even more popularity globally.
Heavy promotions and sponsorships
Big organizations like UFC, Bellator or ONE Championship put a lot of marketing effort in popularizing the sport worldwide – and they had success with it! PPV brings in a lot of money and with it heavy promotions for the fighters. Also, there are a lot of brands sponsoring MMA fighters. Well-known brands like Reebok, Harley Davidson, and Monster Energy have been supporting fighters and helped to promote the sport in general.
Fantasy MMA League
Like in every other global sport, betting on MMA fights is becoming a big business. During the past few years different fantasy MMA sites were founded, such as Bovada, SportsBet or 5Dimes. All these pages are known for their online betting options.
