The many different kinds of martial arts can be confusing for beginners and often make people feel lost in a deluge of options. Choosing the right martial arts program for your child, yourself or your whole family is an important decision that might seem difficult.

Our Sovereign family wants to help you make the best decision and choose a program that is the right match for your needs and expectations. Besides the choice of the right program, you probably have more unanswered questions when thinking about starting a new sport or changing the martial arts school.

We often get asked similar questions from parents interested in enrolling their child in martial arts classes and adults looking for alternatives to the same old boring gym workout routines. This article may answer some of your questions!

What is a good age to start martial arts training?

We believe that martial arts training has benefits for every age! In our Tiny Tigers program (ages 3-6), we focus on developing listening skills and appropriate classroom behavior in a fun and playful way.

For our Junior Warriors (ages 7-12) the martial arts training offers a great learning atmosphere. Beyond practicing self-defense techniques, skills against bullying and maintaining or improving physical fitness, our students develop discipline, respect, self-esteem, goal setting skills, and confidence.

For teens and adults (ages 13+), martial arts training is a great way to improve fitness and flexibility, to learn self-defense skills, grow confidence, develop discipline, and release stress. There’s no such thing as the perfect age to get started. Our Sovereign family is always open for new members of all ages. We’re sure to find the right program for you!

Can I participate in the same class as my child/ can siblings be in the same class?

There is no accurate answer to this question. It always depends on the program you plan to attend to and the age of your children.

For example, we offer Karate and Kickboxing classes in which parents and children can be in the same class together, as the classes are open for everyone from 7 years and older. In both Karate and Kickboxing classes, you will see participants of all ages, even entire families, having a great time together.

However, there are also some separated programs, like the martial arts classes for our Tiny Tigers (ages 3-6), Junior Warriors (ages 7-12) and Teens/Adults (ages 13+). We always recommend talking to the instructor of the class if you have any special requests. We always find a good solution for everyone!

Can boys and girls be in the same class?

Yes, absolutely! All of our classes are co-educational. We have a good mix of both girls and boys in our martial arts programs and teach our students from the beginning to respect each other, no matter which gender you are.

How many times per week can I attend classes?

If you sign up for classes with us at Sovereign Martial Arts you can attend as many times per week as you like. We encourage our unlimited students to attend class at least two days per week, but we also have some members who attend up to five days per week! Basically, it’s your decision how often you want to train. You may only attend one day per week, which is a great option for beginners, very young children, or students who have a very limited amount of time to dedicate to their training.

Do I have a specific schedule?

No, you are not locked in a schedule at our Sovereign schools. All of our classes are offered on different days and times throughout the week. Unlimited students can pick and choose whatever classes fit into their schedule each week. There is no need to make reservations or call ahead to save a spot in the classes, you just show up and enjoy your selected class. However, if you miss a session and want to catch up on the learned skills, you may simply come another day that the class is offered. We provide you ultimate flexibility and the possibility to make your very own schedule week by week.

Can I take martial arts classes if I’m not in good shape, not very athletic, or if I don’t have any experience?

Absolutely! Don’t be afraid, everyone has to start somewhere!  Martial arts is a great way to improve your health and overall physical fitness, no matter what the starting point is. Our programs allow students to go step by step, level by level, at their own pace. Our programs are ideal for people of all ages and skill levels as well as those who want to improve their physical shape. In our Sovereign family, everyone has a unique journey according to their needs!

Do I need to buy a uniform?

No, you don’t need to buy a uniform by yourself. At Sovereign Martial Arts, a uniform is included in our kids and adults programs. Besides the uniform, in some programs, additional equipment is required and must be purchased in the school once you enroll in our programs.

What kind of styles do you teach at sovereign martial arts?

We teach different styles of martial arts for kids and adults, traditional Karate named Shotokan (ages 7+), Kickboxing (ages 7+) and Krav Maga for teens and adults. In our Tiny Tigers program for children between three and six, basic skills of Karate, as well as motor skills and character development skills, are taught. Overall, we provide the perfect match for everyone!

What kind of experience do the instructors have?

All our instructors have more than 100 years of combined martial arts experience! Good instructors are our number one priority. Many martial arts schools allow their new instructors to teach classes directly. At our academies, we believe that all classes deserve the best instruction so we make sure that all the instructors are 110% ready to lead a class. Furthermore, our academies offer internship training for students who desire to become instructors. We want to give our Junior Instructors the necessary experience, so they are allowed to assist in classes with the supervision of a higher level teacher and learn step by step to become the best instructor possible. Our martial art schools stand for a good education with professional instructors!

Can I do a trial to see if I like martial arts?

Yes, for sure! To find out if martial arts is good for you and your family, we have a special offer. Our two-week trial, the confidence building course, is perfect to learn about our program, meet our staff and get a first impression of our school. The trial includes an exclusive t-shirt, two private lessons, and two group lessons!

How do I get started?

The very first step is to get in contact with us! You can fill out our contact form, send us an email, a message on Facebook or give us a call. We would be more than happy to schedule an appointment with you, give you the chance to meet one of our Head Instructors and take you on a tour through a Sovereign school of your choice. If you like, you can also watch a class and ask everything you want to know!

Is there anything else I should know?

The best way to learn is by doing! In order to gain the full experience of a class, you should leave all prejudgements behind and open your mind. Martial arts offers way more than you might imagine. Without a doubt, the most important aspect of martial arts is the sense of community developed within our schools. The relationship between students and instructors is the key. Martial arts can be challenging sometimes and besides your own willpower, you need people around you that keep on pushing you along your way. We are not just any gym, we are a family!
