In this article, we will break the answer down for you into five simple steps!
1 – Why Should I Learn MMA?
Before getting started, you have to know why mixed martial arts is beneficial for you. The most obvious reason is learning how to fight correctly. This means knowing how to defend yourself in every dangerous situation, but also knowing how to avoid fighting if possible. Fighting inside the gym is completely different than fighting outside the gym. You learn to always solve conflicts without getting physical, but if you’re being pushed in a violent situation you know how to defend yourself.
Another important aspect of martial arts is character development. All MMA fighters have the mindset of a warrior; a strong person with discipline, respect, and patience. You learn to face your fears and build deep, loyal friendships with your teammates.
2 – Understanding The Three Main Areas of Fighting
If you’re wondering how to start learning MMA, you have to understand the three main areas of fighting. This helps you to decide what martial art disciplines you can devote your time learning.
Stand-up: Stand-Up fighting occurs while both opponents are standing on their feet, using hands, feet, elbows, and knees to fight. The main styles for stand-up fighting are Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Karate and Taekwondo.
Clinch: Both fighters are standing, but the clinch differs from stand-up fighting as the fighter are body-to-body. Also, they are allowed to hold one another fighting for position and leverage rather than delivering strikes. The styles used in the clinch are Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu.
Ground: As it is easy to assume, in this style of fighting, the opponents are laying on the ground. The techniques used on the ground are Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Judo.
3 – Deciding What to Focus On
What makes MMA so interesting is that you do not only focus on one martial art. As the name suggests, multiple disciplines are learned in order to fight with a variety of different skills. If you are a beginner, it makes sense to learn a single martial art first before getting into MMA. It’s important to learn some basics in order to decrease the risk of injuries and make sure you practice your skills correctly.
